The reason why aluminium is so indispensable to the aerospace industry is because of high strength and weight ratio. Airframes must be strong enough to withstand the stress of takeoff and landing over time. At the same time, if the metal is too heavy, it will require more fuel consumption during flight. There fore, aluminum is often a more cost-effective option for aircraft.
Since the aerospace industry is so specialized, it's no surprise that aircraft rely on specific high-performance alloys. One well known aircraft aluminium is 7075. 7075 aircraft aluminum is known for its excellent mechanical properties as well as ductility, high strength, toughness and fatigue resistance. Other popular aerospace aluminum alloys are 6061, 6063, 2014, 5052, 7050, 7085 and 7068.
6013 aluminum alloy is one of the most advanced aluminum alloys in the world. It has excellent formability (castability, plastic formability, weldability), moderate specific strength, good corrosion resistance, superior damage tolerance, etc. Therefore it is widely used in the fields of large civil aircraft, military carrier-based aircraft, and rail transit.
6063 grade aluminum is a heat-treatable strengthening alloy with moderate strength in the AL-Mg-Si series. Mg and Si are the main alloying elements. The main strengthening phases in 6063 aluminum alloy are Mg2Si and AlSiFe. The interval time between quenching and artificial aging has a significant effect on the degree of strengthening of 6063 aluminum alloy.
Found in the finer details of an aircraft, 6063 is mainly used for aesthetic and architectural finishes. It is used primarily for intricate extrusions. The common states of 6063 grade aluminum plate include O state, T4 state, T6 state and T5 state. The alloy in T651 state is formed by stretching on the basis of T6 state and eliminating internal stress, which is more suitable for processing and forming.
6063-T6 is used for occasions where the strength is not so high, and the main form is generally aluminium plate and bar; the main form of 6063-T5 is extruded profiles of various shapes, which is commonly used in building aluminum alloy doors and windows, curtain walls, industrial frame structures.
